Nigerians in UK, stop this nonsense on Tiktok
Y'all are desecrating the profession and the reputation of Nigerians in the UK!
I was scrolling on Tiktok just yesterday and what I saw disgusted me. I saw videos and videos and videos of Nigerians who are in care jobs in the UK describing their jobs in a not so pleasant manner.
I don’t know what I did to Tiktok but they kept on showing me loads and loads of content with the same message.
You’ll see someone in a disposable white apron and gloves carrying a soiled pad and saying Imagine things like “Imagine a big boy like me in Nigeria coming to pack sh*t in the UK”.
It could have been ignored if it was just one random person but in a space of 30 minutes, I saw upto 10 videos with the same theme.
Let me tell you the implications of what you’re doing: first, you’re desecrating the care profession. Yes we know not everyone likes a care job but there are people who have built a career with it long before you became a carer. If they had talked badly about their jobs, do you think other people would want to get a care job?
Secondly, because it is a large number of Nigerians who are making these videos on Tiktok, employers may begin to become wary of Nigerians. They may begin to see Nigerians as people who cannot uphold the ethics and values of the profession and a potential high risk employee with a high likelihood of exposing confidential client informtaion on the internet. Of course, you know the consequence of that just like its happening now.
People get sacked for accidentally revealing work information that they might have thought is trivial.
Yes, we know that’s the trending content because people who put up these kind of information gets lots of followers but you need to be careful about what you put on the internet these days. You don’t know who is watching and how a harmless dance video you made will come back and bite you.
We all know that Nigeria has a not so pleasant reputation abroad - eventhough lots of Nigerians are doing well but try and not add to the bad name of Nigeria.
Don’t give us a reputation for unpleasant things. You can post more entertaining things on Tiktok without revealing too much information or talking down on the job that’s helping to pay your bills right now.
You should be guided as actions have consequences.
